HELLO,

A magnet rest in north-south direction only . Why does it not rest in east-west direction ?

Kind regards

Pratham joshi

dear Joshi,
the earth is imagined to be a huge magnetized sphere of iron containing a huge permanent magnet at its centre.
the south seeking magnetic pole is located in the northern hemisphere near the geographical north and the north seeking is located at a dramatically opposite point in the southern hemisphere near the geographically south.
all magnets align in the north- south direction of the earth when suspended freely. this property is known a directive property. using directive property of magnet magnetic compasses are devised.

hope it helps

the South Pole of the Earth's magnet is in the geographical North because it attracts the North Pole of the suspended magnet and vice versa.

because the magnet has only two poles
1)north pole
2)south pole

BECAUSE MAGNETS HAS ONLY TWO POLES
1) NORTH POLE
2) SOUTH POLE

Because magnets have only two poles -
1] South Pole
2] North Pole

the earth has a magnetic field.Geologicaly it lies on the north and the south poles. So,when a magnet is placed on a table(for eg.),it replells the earths magnetic fields as like poles repell. This causes the magnets to be on only north and south poles, due to the earths magnetic field.

HOPE THIS HELPS....
