hello sir, i have a doubt about how the materials gain a perticular charge, i mean for example when a glass rod is rubbed with silk cloth, why does the glass rod gains positive charge only?? why cant it gain negative charge or why does the silk cloth gains negative charge only? why cant it gain a positive charge??

When a body is touched with an other, a weak chemical bond is formed between them, now when we slide them across each other, the electrons engaged in bond formation transfer from one body to the other. Some bodies prefer to keep the electrons some give away depending on their molecular structure. Glass rod when rubbed with silk prefers to give away the electrons to the silk and becomes positively charged  Negative charges are developed in silk as electrons flow into it.This is true for any pair of objects that are rubbed to be electrified
