Here, ‘and’ joins ‘the jewel thief was hiding in the basement’ with ‘the police was looking for him on the
This conjunction shows addition. It adds one sentence (‘the police was looking for him on the ground another (‘the jewel thief was hiding in the basement’).

I Want to know that both are showing the opposites as in but example - They r saying opposite ( Written by meritnation itself )

But the meaning is not same...
So can u guideme in this question
Tomorrow is my test so pls fast

Although, apparently the two given sentences seem similar, two sentences with opposite meanings but they still are different.
Experienced and out of form is clear that they are two ideas, so but is used.
But in the second sentence, where "the hiding of the thief in the basement" and " the police was looking for him in the Ground Floor" are not totally opposite ideas. They are denoting a series of two continuing actions, first thief is hiding in the basement, and also the police are searching him in the ground floor. So, two actions in sequence, we used And with additive quality. Don't confuse with basement and ground floor.
