how are locomotary movements brought about in vertebrates?

While fishes among vertebrates have fins as the locomotory organs, the amphibians develop limbs. The reptiles are characterized by five fingered limbs. In birds the forelimbs are modified into wings for flying. Finally mammals have fully developed forelimbs and hind limbs.
