How can oxygen and xenon have comparable ionization enthalpies??? Xenon has a complete octet so shldnt its ionisation energy be much higher than oxygen?? In facts numerically it is less than oxygen?? How??

dear student,
the molar ionisation enthalpy of oxygen is 1314 kj/mol while that of xenon is 1170 kj/mol
It is because oxygen being a small atom the effect of the nucleus over the valence electron is higher that  xenon which is fully filled and due to effect of screening or shielding the effective nuclear force of the nucleus over the valence electron is decreased.
