how can we say that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed              
 

It is correct that energy can neither be created nor be destroyed because energy is transformed from one form to another.

For example if a body is released from a height then the potential energy of the body is gradually transformed into kinetic energy (i.e neither created nor destroyed )
