how can you say that douglas was confident in the beginning at YCMA  ?

Dear student,

Douglas seemed confident because he had known about the dimensions of the pool. The Yakima river was treacherous and his mother had warned him against the possibilities of drowning in a river. The Y.M.C.A pool seemed to be safe enough. Moreover, it was only two or three feet deep at the shallow end; and while it was nine feet deep at the other, the drop was gradual. Also, he had got a pair of water wings so that he could swim easily.
