How did Charlie realize that he wasnt at the second level?

Charlie realised he was not on the second level as the tunnel opened into a much smaller room with fewer ticket windows and train gates. the information booth was wooden and looked old. There were brass spittoons on the floor. He saw a man pull out a gold watch from his vest pocket and realised people were dressed in clothes that belonged to the 1890s. He saw a small Currier and Ives locomotive and was sure he wasn't on the second level.
