how did douglas and his father react to the incident in which a wave had knocked him down? 

As a young child, Douglas' father had taken him to a beach in California. Although, he hung on tight to his father, the strong waves kept knocking him down. He was buried under water and was running out of breath. This incident was also responsible for the author's aversion from water. His father, on the other hand, kept laughing.
