Since when ironmaster said the peddler to leave Elda tried to stop him by saying his father that we have promised him for Christmas party and we can't refuse anyone on Christmas day.

Edla persuaded her father by saying that they must not break the promise that they gave to the peddler and they shouldn't make that Christmas eve bitter and let the paddler be there as they would feel lonely during Christmas...

Edla did not think it proper to chase away a human being whom they had invited to their house and had promised him Christmas cheer. she also felt pity for the peddler ,who she felt had no place to rest without the fear of being chased away.
