Jody was concerned about his father's ill health but was equally worried about the fawn whom they had orphaned by killing the doe. This was the reason why he felt very guilty and wanted to go and bring back the fawn. He requested his father to bring back the fawn. His father praised him for his strength and will power and was smarter than boys of your age. This was also convincing when we see Jody's father saying that if it had not been for the doe, he would not have survived for another day. He also asked his mother to which he got permission.
