how did narrator realise that she had come to the right address?

 On her first visit to the address, she was quite unsure as to whether she had reached the correct address or not. However, when she saw Mrs. Dorling wearing her mother's green knit cardigan with the colour of the buttons turning pale, she instantly recognised it and thus, got convinced that she had reached the right address.

 The writer gets a doubt about whether she had come to the right place when the woman at the door fails to recognize her. Hence she is in doubt whether she reached the right house. But then the woman(Mrs. Dorling) steps aside and the writer recognizes her mother's cardigan that had lost its color after continued washing. When Mrs. Dorling notices this she tries to hide behind the door. This flighty behavior of hers convinces the writer that she had reached the correct house and that Mrs. Dorling was faking not recognising her.

As she went inside the housd, she recognised all hef belongings such as te cutley, crockery, table cloth, and the Hanukkah candle- stand.
