How did the appointment of residents in Indian states help the company?

Dear student

1. Residents appointed by East India Company  were political or commercial agents who served Company for further the interests of the Company.
2. They began interfering in the internal affairs of Indian states.
3. They also tried to decide who was to be the successor to the throne, and who was to be appointed in administrative posts.
4. Sometimes Company also forced the states into a “subsidiary alliance”.
