How did the British help reduce caste regidities?

The British did not do anything directly to reduce caste rigidities. After all, untouchability remained legal during the British rule. However, certain aspects of the modern economy that emerged during British rule like industries and railways helped reduce caste rigidities. People of all caste had to work together in modern industries and travel together in railways.
