How did the changes in the constitution affect the king, local government and the economy and the church?

The changes in the French Constitution after the revolution had the following effects.

1. The King was initially made a constitutional monarch responsible to the National Assembly. Later, however, when it was known that the King was conspiring against the Revolution, even that position was taken away. France was declared a republic and the monarchy was abolished. Eventually, the King was tried and executed.

2. Local governments received more powers following the Constitution. Local governments were given greater power to regulate and govern local affairs.

3. Economy was reformed in favour of the bourgeoisie. Earlier, it was the Third Estate which paid all taxes. This was no longer the case and the tax burden was more equitably distributed. Various factors of the economy were modernized, particularly the measurement system.

4. The church lost a lot of its properties and its tax exempt status. It no longer occupied the predominant place in the country's social hierarchy.
