How did the story brings out the horror of wars forced by people

The narrator's mother was scared that they would lose all their belongings in the time of war and handed them over to Mrs Dorling for safe keeping. The horrors of war are reflected in that the narrator and her family fear for their lives and their belongings. they need to go away to save themselves. The narrator gets back alone after the war to a house that is much smaller and plainer than her original house. She mentions about how the people were less cared for their lives, how the bread was turning a lighter colour too. This is a comment on the many lives that are lost during war, the hardships faced by people as they displaced, the dearth of food and water. It is a comment on the horrors faced by Jews at the hands of Hitler.
