How do contractile vacuoles help in maintaining the water balance ?

Dear student,

Contractile vacuoles are those vacuoles that have the property of contracting. They regulate the amount of water inside a cell. When the solute concencration is higher inside the cell, water flows into the cell. In case excess water flows into the cell, the contractile vacuole expels the excess water by contracting (pumping out).
