How do forests help in maintaing the natural balance ?

Forests are important natural resources that play an important role in maintaining balance between other natural resources such as soil, water, air, wildlife, etc.

Soil is the weathered form of rock which remains fertile by presence of humus. Soil can be prevented from erosion by growing plants and trees on it, as roots hold the soil.  So, if forest are cut down on large  scale, quality of soil also gets affected . Soil becomes infertile and the fertile land is turned easily into barren land that can no longer support the growth of new trees.

Depleting forest resources also affect the cycling of water in nature, as transpiration from trees play a great part in water cycle. If trees would not be there then soil would be not there to soak the water underground.  In this way underground resources of water would also get depleted. If proper amount of underground water would not be there, then this would also become problem for the growth of new plants.

Forests are referred as ‘lungs of the earth’ as they help to purify air by releasing oxygen and absorning carbon dioxide in bulk through photosynthesis.

Forests are the shelter for wildlife and important part of their food chain, if forests are not there then all wildlife would be disturbed and find difficulty in survival.
