How do forests influence the climate?

Dear Student,

Forests have a close relationship with the climate.Forests cover 31% of the world's land surface. After oceans forests are the largest depositaries of carbon. As we know ,we humans take in oxygen and give out carbon dioxide.Forests take in this carbondioxide and give out oxygen. Thus maintaing a balance of the gases and providing us with enough of oxygen.Forests store carbon in its wood, leaves and soil, thus reducing its level in atmosphere. When forests are cut ,this balance is disturbed and carbondioxide level ,carbon level and other harmful gases increases in the atmosphere causing a climate change. As we know carbondioxide is a green house gas ,its increased level forms a shield for the earth's heat to escape causing green house effect and finally Global Warming.Deforestation does not only increase carbon dioxide but also levels of other green house gases.
Forests also play major role in cloud formation and bringing rain. The water transpired by plants form clouds and then return to earth as rain. Thus influencing the climate of an area. Removal of forest cover  reduces rain and slowly converting the area into desert.

Forests influence climate change largely by affecting the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When forests grow, carbon is removed from the atmosphere and absorbed in wood, leaves and soil.

Forests maintain the Oxygen-Carbon Dioxide balance in the atmosphere. This mean that when animals and humans release carbon dioxide, it is taken in by trees and these trees release oxygen which is used by human and animals. If trees are there the temperature of a place will be balanced. If the trees are cut, the temperature of that same place will increase as there will be no trees to take in the carbon dioxide exhaled by organisms. As carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, more quantity of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will mean that more heat of Sun will be absorbed which will result in the increase of temperature of a place or even the whole Earth. Also trees release water vapour through transpiration. This water vapour will then return as rain. This will result in making the climate of a place wet. Thus, trees influence the climate of a place.
