how do interferons protect us

Interferons are proteins made and released by host cells in response to pathogens such as bacteria, virus, etc. A virus infected cell will release interferon causing nearby cells to heighten antiviral defense. They are named by their ability to interfere with replication of viral genome. They activate immune cells by increasing expression of antigens.
