How does democracy produce an accountable , responsive and legitimate government? (4 mark question)

Accountability:
The people form the government by electing their representatives therefore, in a democracy the government is expected to cater to the needs and expectations of the people. The people have the right to and the medium to examine the decision making process A.K.A there is transparency. In this way the government is accountable.

Responsive:
Because it is a people's government, they have to cater to the needs of the people. This is usually something that non democratic governments lack in. Because there happens to be transparency, the people examine the process and this makes the government look after the needs and take measures to fulfil it

Legitimate:
In any Democratic country there is has to be  formal constitution that is the binding force. It keeps the powers of government to the limited. Also while making decisions, the government has to follow norms and rules that make sure even though the decision process is long the decision made is more acceptable by the people.

In a democracy, we are most concerned with ensuring that people will have the right to
choose their rulers and people will have control over the rulers.   If they do not work
properly  ,  people  can  overthrow  them.  .  Whenever  possible  and  necessary,  citizens
should be able to participate in decision making, that affects them all. Thus, democracy
produces an accountable, government.
ii.  Democracy is a government that is attentive to the needs and demands of the people and
is largely free of corruption.   Democracies should not frustrate the needs of the people
and  ignore  the  demands  of  a  majority  of  its  population.  Thus  it  a  responsive
Government.
iii.  Democratic  government  is  a  legitimate  government.  It  is  people’s  own  government.

government. If they lose the majority, they have to resign.

Taking democracy to the vast multitudes of Indian population, the one sixth of humanity, of which not more than one third was literate; is termed as ‘the greatest gamble in the history’.

The world was always cynical about its success. So much so that the Manchester guardian in its edition of february 2 1952 reported- “if ever a country took a leap in the dark towards democracy, it was india”. Many obituaries were written of indian democacy even before its inception. After demise of nehru they predicted that india will explode. They did the same thing when Indira declared emergency.

The astounding success of indian democracy has baffled both its detractors and supporters. This is how indian democracy has been able to beat all odds to stand the test of time.:-

Cultural ethos:- India has a culture which celebtrates the ethos of toleration and universal brotherhood. Also, India has huge social diversity. The multitudes of religions, castes, languages, ethnicities and ways of life negate any form of imposition of cultural homogeneity, which autocracy and fascism demands. It would have been impossible to rule india by totalitarian ideologies and autocratic rulers.

Leadership:- Indian leadership at the dawn of our independence had abiding faith in democracy. Though mahatma gandhi was a proponent of village leval democracy, he did not preesed hard as the majority opinion in the constituent assembly was in favour of parliamentary democracy.

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of the the republic, contributed more than anyone else in the success of indian democracy. Nehru was a true democrat.
