Taking democracy to the vast multitudes of Indian population, the one sixth of humanity, of which not more than one third was literate; is termed as ‘the greatest gamble in the history’.
The world was always cynical about its success. So much so that the Manchester guardian in its edition of february 2 1952 reported- “if ever a country took a leap in the dark towards democracy, it was india”. Many obituaries were written of indian democacy even before its inception. After demise of nehru they predicted that india will explode. They did the same thing when Indira declared emergency.
The astounding success of indian democracy has baffled both its detractors and supporters. This is how indian democracy has been able to beat all odds to stand the test of time.:-
Cultural ethos:- India has a culture which celebtrates the ethos of toleration and universal brotherhood. Also, India has huge social diversity. The multitudes of religions, castes, languages, ethnicities and ways of life negate any form of imposition of cultural homogeneity, which autocracy and fascism demands. It would have been impossible to rule india by totalitarian ideologies and autocratic rulers.
Leadership:- Indian leadership at the dawn of our independence had abiding faith in democracy. Though mahatma gandhi was a proponent of village leval democracy, he did not preesed hard as the majority opinion in the constituent assembly was in favour of parliamentary democracy.
Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of the the republic, contributed more than anyone else in the success of indian democracy. Nehru was a true democrat.
