How does drought poses a threat to rain-fed farming areas? Farming depend on rainfall not on drought, so how? Please elaborate

Dear Student,

The rain helps in the following ways:

1) Rain water aids in the process of soil formation. It enters the rocks through the cracks in them and freezes at low temperatures. This expands and contracts the rocks, which results in the breaking down of the rocks. Another way in which water helps in the formation of soil is when running water flows along rocks. The flow of water along the rocks creates a friction between water and rocks, which results in the weathering of rocks. This leads to the formation of soil. The soil thus formed may flow along with the water and get deposited elsewhere and makes it suitable for agriculture.

2) Water from the rain makes the soil moist which inturn helps the plants to take up mineral and nutrients thereby facilitating their growth.

3) Water is essential for plants (in fact for all organisms) for various metabolic reactions like Photosynthesis, germination etc.

Thus, agriculture is only feasible where plenty of water is available for good growth of plants, which is not possible is water-less (drought) or conditions like scarcity of water.
