how does franz attituted change towards m. hamel in the end ?

When M. Hamel announced to the class that it was their last french lesson, it came like a thunderstorm to Franz. He suddenly realised that he neither knew how to write nor speak  french properly. He also felt sorry for M. Hamel who was to leave suddenly after forty years of faithful service.
Suddenly, he developed a great fascination for the french language and listened carefully to every word that M. Hamel said. He realised that he may never see M.Hamel again. All this together changed his attitude towards M. Hamel. He forgot M.Hamel's ruler and for the first time, could easily understand what he was teaching.
