How does gravity effect the growth of a plant?

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

The growth movement in plants in response to the force of gravity is known as geotropism or gravitropism. In geotropism, the roots of the plant always grow downwards while the shoots always grow upwards, away from the earth.

Gravitropism in plants helps to optimize the growth of various parts of the plant. For example, this helps the plant leaves to be in a position so that they can receive proper sunlight. Thus, the plants raise in order to compete with other plants for sunlight. On the other hand, gravitropism also helps in growth of the plant roots inside the soil in a co-ordinated manner, such that the roots are present near supplies of water and minerals. In this way, it provides adaptive advantage to the plant.
