how does the dead organic matter get decomposed in nature explain

Dear Student,

Decomposition is the process of breakdown of complex organic matter into inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide, water, nutrients etc by the decomposers. The main decomposer present in soil is earthworm and the raw material for decomposition consists of dead plant remains such as leaves, bark, flowers and dead animal remains like faecal matter. Earthworm acts on these raw materials and break them down into smaller particles. This process is called fragmentation. After breakdown, the particles decompose in soil and a dark coloured substance called humus is accumulated. Humus is a dark coloured organic matter formed from the decayed plant and animal material by the action of decomposers. It is found in the top layer of soil and is rich in nutrients.
This humus is further degraded by some microbes and at last it is released as inorganic nutrients.
