HOW IS AIR POLLUTION A THREAT TO STONE MONUMENTS AND METALLIC INSTALLATIONS?

Dear Student,

1. Acids can severely damage Stone Monuments. For Ex - Coal Industries emit a large amount of harmful gases like NO and SO2 (Sulphur Dioxide) which then gives rise to Acid Rain.
Acid Rain tends to degrade the stone monuments.

2. Small particles of Carbon which are emitted by Cars also contributes to the degradation of Stone Monuments.

3. Nitric acid and Sulphuric acid are highly oxidising and are able to dissolve the calcium present in monuments like Marbles and Limestones.
This leads to cracking to marbles of the monuments and their degradation.

Hope it helps
Regards!
