How is colour of coordination entity determined from complementary colour absorbed?

The colour of coordination complexes is due to the absorption of visible light of particular colour during d-d transition. For example: If red light is absorbed by a complex, it appears blue because red is complementary to blue. Similarly, if yellow and green region of visible light is absorbed; the colour of complex is purple.
