The first vermicompost was prepared by using organic materials such as waste food, animal waste etc., microorganisms and red worms. It can be prepared in the following way:

• A layer of sand (2-3 cm thick) is placed at the bottom of a wooden box.
• Vegetable waste, parts of the plant, weeds, garden waste etc. is spread over the sand along with some water (for the survival of earthworms and few earthworms.
• The box is covered with a sheet of cloth. Top layers of the matter are gently mixed after 2-3 days. After 3-4 weeks, the contents are converted into a soil-like material called vermicompost. This can be used as a natural fertilizer, after being dried in the sun.
