 Sound is produced by the vibration of objects. When objects vibrate, it collides with the molecules in the medium. This collision produces mechanical oscillations in the medium. Because of this, sound waves are known as mechanical waves.

Sound is a longitudinal mechanical wave. It moves by compression and rarefraction in the medium of propagation. It is produced by vibration. For example, a string vibrates to produce a tune, vocal cord vibrate to produce a sound. In your lab a tuning fork vibrates to produce a sound wave. Not just this, even your ear-drum vibrate as per the souns to hear a voice.
