How many significant figures (SF's) are there in the following ?! :-
(i) 10.00
(ii) 1.50 X 104
Kindly tell me which rule u've used to tell the SF's here.. in each part.. (The thing is that I'm asking this question just to know the rules used here.. so plz don't forget to mention the rules used).. :')

Dear Student,

(i) There are 4 significant figures in 10.00.

(ii) There are 3 significant figures in 1.50 x 104.

This is because of the following rules:
  1. All non-zero numbers are significant. This makes 1 (10.00) in (i) and 1,5 (1.50) in (ii) significant.
  2. Trailing zeros or the final zero in the decimal portion are significant. This makes two 0 after decimal (10.00)  in (i) and 1 zero after 5 (1.50) in (ii) significant.
  3. Trailing zeros in a whole number with decimal shown are significant. This makes 0 after 1 (10.00) in (i) significant.
  4. For a number in scientific notation, N x 10x, all digits comprising N are significant by the above rules. 10 and x are not significant. This makes 1.50 in (ii) significant and 104 non significant,

Overall, there are 4 significant figues in (i) and 3 significant figures in (ii).
