How many TCAcycles are required during the complete oxidation of one sucrose molecule? (Kindly explain the answer also)

a) 4
b) 2
c) 1
d) 3

Kindly answer sir/mam.

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

The correct answer is a) 4

Sucrose is a disaccharide made up of glucose and fructose (two six carbon sugars equivalent to two molecules of glucose)

During glycolysis two glucose molecule form four molecules of pyruvate. (As one glucose molecule on glycolysis gives two molecules of pyruvate).

One molecule of pyruvate means one round TCA cycle. Therefore, four molecules of pyruvate, four rounds of TCA cycle.

Sucrose (6C+6C)     Glycolysis      4  Pyruvate (3C each)                     4  rounds of TCA Cycle
