The scatter diagrams for a positive correlation coefficient are upward sloping. While the scatter diagrams for a negative correlation coefficient are downward sloping. 

Also, note that when the correlation coefficient is very high i.e, when r is close to 1, the dots in the diagrams (scatter plots) will be very close to each other.On the other hand, when the correlation coefficient is very low i.e, when r is close to 0, then the scatter plots will be very spaced (far from each other).
