How to find the ascending order of boiling or melting point of three or more compounds without the knowledge of their boiling point data,i.e, without numerical values?

Dear Student,

Boiling point depends upon the intermolecular forces of attraction.

1. Molecules which strongly interact or bond with each other through a variety of intermolecular forces can not move easily or rapidly and therefore, do not achieve the kinetic energy necessary to escape the liquid state.

2. Therefore, molecules with strong intermolecular forces will have higher boiling points. This is a consequence of the increased kinetic energy needed to break the intermolecular bonds so that individual molecules may escape the liquid as gases.

3. So,the functional groups having large amount oh H-bonding like in acids and longer carbon chain will have high boiling point.

4.Covalent molecules are made up of electrically neutral molecules. So the force of attraction between the molecules is very low and hence it requires very less energy to break these weak molecular forces and thus low melting and boiling point.
