How to identify which ketone among option (1) and (4) undergoes Baeyer Villiger oxidation?
Q12. An organic compound does not reacts with Tollen's reagent but undergoes Baeyer Villiger oxidation. The compound is
(1)

(2)

(3) C H 3 C H O
(4)

Sol. Answer (4)

Dear Student,

Baeyer Villiger oxidation is shown by all ketones. However, here you must see that which compound doesnot give Tollen's test. In (1), alkyne group is also present and terminal alkynes reactswith terminal alkynes to give white precipitate. Therefore, (1) cannot be the answer. Only (4) doesnot react with Tollen's reagent and show Baeyer Villiger oxidation. Hence, correct answer is (4)
