1. black copper oxide from a mixture of copper oxide and zinc oxide.
2. to separate CO from amixture of CO and CO2.

The mixture of zinc oxide and copper oxide can be separated by following method:
- Zinc oxide is an amphoteric oxide which can react with both acids and base.
- Copper oxide is metallic oxide which is basic and can react with acids.
- Add any base like NaOH solution to the mixture.
- Only Zinc oxide will react with NaOH to form [Zn(OH)4]2+ complex while copper oxide will remain unreacted.
- Finally, with the help of adding acid, zinc oxide can be separated from the solution
