how to solve? Calculate the amount of sodium and chlorine gas produced during the electrolysis of fused NaCl by the passage of 1 ampere current for 30 minutes. Molar masses of sodium and chlorine gas are 23 g mol-' and 71 g mop respectively.

Dear Student,

Given,
Current = 1 Ampere
time = 30 minutes = 1800 sec
Charge = Current x time
Charge = 1 x 1800 = 1800 C

During electrolysis
Na+ + e-     --------> Na
1 mole of electrons produce 1 mole of sodium i.e. 23 g of sodium
Charge on 1 mole of electrons = 96500 C
So, 96500 C produces 23 g of sodium
1800 C will produce = (23/96500)*1800 = 0.429 g of sodium

 2Cl-    --------> Cl2 + 2e-

2 moles of electrons produce 1 mole of Cl2
2*96500 i.e. 193000 C of electrons produce 71 g of Cl2
1800 C of electrons will produce = (71/193000)*1800 = 0.662 g of Chlorine gas (Cl2)
