how we can identify whether the mistake is in journal or in ledger in rectification of errors

Generally, it is given in the question itself, whether the error is in ledger posting or incorrect recording of the journal entry. However in case of journal error can be like:-
1. Full incorrect entry.
2. Incorrect amounts recorded.
3. Incorrect accounts debited or credited.
To identify all these we have to correlate journal entry with the transaction, only that way we can see, whether the error is in journal or ledger posting.
