Q. How would you demonstrate what causes the changing appearance of the Moon from Earth, using the materials pictured below?

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Moon revolves around the earth and while revolving, its surface gets illuminated by sun. The change in the surface of the moon being illuminated by sun causes change in the appearance of moon from the earth and form lunar cycle. It can be demonstrated by using the flashlight as sun, tennis ball as moon and basketball as earth.
We get to see only that part of the moon which is illuminated by sun. Illumination of moon by sun depend on its position. e.g. you can demonstrate the crescent moon by illuminating only a small portion of moon's surface by flashlight, first quarter and third quarter phase of moon can be demonstrated by keeping the moon (tennis ball) at 900 angle to sun and moon and exactly half of the moon is illuminated while the other half is in dark.

when viewed as above , then on shining the torch the tennis balls shadow would be cast on a particular spot on the basketball. That spot is according to model the part of earth which experiences solar eclipse.
