Due to long exposure to atmosphere, white lead is converted into black PbS because of the action of PbS present in the atmosphere. As a result, statues turn black.
Reaction:
On treatment of these blackened statues with H2O2 the black PbS gets oxidised to white PbSO4 and the colour is restored back!
