I do not understand---was when small.

1- what does the speaker reveal?
2- what is the speaker's intention?

Dear student 

1. The speaker reveals that, even though he and his son live together in the same house, he does not understand his own son, or his son's actions.
 
2. The speaker's intention is to try and rebuild his relationship with his son, like it used to be when his son was younger.
