I have to solve this... Can anybody help?
Solution
The solution containing solute Ba(NO3)2 is an example of weak electrolytic solution which dissociates partially. Therefore, the van't Hoff's factor (i) is given by the formula,
i = 1 + α(n − 1)
where, α is degree of dissociation and n is number of ions in which solute dissociates
Here, Ba(NO3)2 dissociates as follows:
Ba(NO3)2 → Ba2+ + 2NO3−
So, the value of n is 3.
Given value of i is 2.74.
Putting all the values i the above formula, we get
2.74 = 1 + α(3 − 1)
1.74 = 2α
α = 0.87 or 87%
Hence, the correct answer is option (b).
