i need the line by line explanation of the poem melon city pls

Dear student,

The explanation is as follows:

The city about which the poet is telling us, there lived a just and placid king.

He ordered that an arch is to be built across the through-fare of the city for everyone to see.

The workmen obeyed and built an arch because it was the king who had ordered it.

The king rode down through the through-fare.

The arch was too low. When the king passed under the arch, it banged the king's crown off his head.

It made the angry and he commanded that the Chief of builders to be hanged for this disgrace.

The chief pleaded for pity and said that it was the workmen's fault. The king asked the execution to be stopped at once.

The king then ordered all workmen to be hanged.

The workmen pleaded and argued that bricks were made of wrong size and hence, it was not their fault.

Then masons who had made the bricks were summoned to be hanged to death.

The masons pleaded for mercy and blamed the architect for the faulty design.

The architect pleaded innocent . He said that he had recommended certain amendments in the building plan.

The matter appeared to be a delicate and confusing case. The king needed to discuss the matter and think over the decision. He asked for the advice of the wisest man.

The wisest man was found and brought to the royal court. The arch was decided to be punished.

Another counsellor gave a new twist to the issue. He said that anything that touched the royal crown couldn't be hanged.

The subjects were watching the entire drama. They were getting restless and they wanted to see some real action, they wanted somebody to be hanged.

The king sensed the mood of the people. He declared someone must be hanged, each man was measured to the noose but
only the king could reach the noose and so he was hanged.

The subjects now needed a new king to occupy the thrown. After a lot of discussion, they decided that the next person who would pass the city gate, would select the king for them.

An idiot happened to pass the door and upon being asked about who should be crowned the king, he named 'melon' because melon was his favourite fruit.

And thus, the people of the city placed a melon on the thrown and crowned it their king. They were more than happy to have a melon as their king.
