" i screamed but only the water heard me". why diddouglas scream and what did it mean?

Douglas screamed because he was scared and wanted some help.  'Only the water heard me' means that there was no one else besides water around him.

He scremed out of his wits for help, qas he was finding it hard to swim or breathe, nd water was going in. he wqaas screming becoz he didn't know how to swim.
