I could use the wand to give the food and water to all the people around the world. It could stop the wars all over the world. And maybe if the robbers had enough money, they wouldnt steal. But I know that there will always be people who will steal. And people who will kill.
Id protect all the animals so they wouldnt be hunted. And after all that Id build myself and my family a nice house. And I could clean the whole town. There is so much trash that needs to be removed.
And for people who dont have homes Id build shelters. Id buy them clothes. And Id buy the best equipment for the hospitals.
But I know this is almost impossible. I can only dream about it.
If I had a magic wand, Id change the school rules for a day. Itd be nice to go home with no homework. The tests would be written when we decided. But that would get boring.

This was the essay topic for one of our groups at the year end assessments. I opened up the answer sheets expecting wondrous stories, colorful dreams and wishes for fancy houses, big cars and luxury?for friends and happy times. I would wish for some of that along with happiness and peace and all those things you hear about so often.
I was surprised, shaken and so moved by the first essay I read. The demands were simple?each wish gave me goose bumps on my hand.
Wish no.1: If I had a magic wand, I would wish for breakfast and I would be able to eat before I went to school
Wish no.2: If I had a magic wand I would wish for my own lunch at school and my box would appear
Wish no.3: If I had a magic wand I would fly in the sky to America ..and then I would wish I could take my parents there too so they could see what I have seen.
I wonder where these little wishes came from? Is that all it would take to make this boy happy? Or is the world of possibilities that this topic throws open a world that this child does not believe in and cannot even dare to dream of?
Along with English and math and values and confidence we have to continue to work hard to help our kids dream and believe that this too can come about!

At first, my new sixth graders found it amusing. But I don’t have a magic wand, one said. I’m not a magician, another added. Do you mean real magic, a girl wondered. So I said to them: think about all the problems in the world. Imagine you had the power to change a thing, what would it be?
I got so many ‘hmms' and tapping of pens and some, ‘but I don’t have any problems, I’m fine’ while I tried to show them how one person’s problem can affect the other.
The kids wore their thinking hats and wielding an imaginary power, they set out writing their essays. Some of their wishes include:
‘If I had a magic wand, I’d change the way the world sees people with disabilities.’
‘If I had a magic wand, I would remove world hunger, give kids a chance to go to school and stop Boko Haram because kids should have the rights to go to school.’
‘If I had a magic wand, I would change bad houses into beautiful houses. I would give poor people money to buy new homes.’
‘I would help people have access to clean water because many people who drink that contaminated water can get sick and have many diseases and sometimes, they can’t get to a doctor. They can die and the cycle begins again and again and again.’
‘I would make everyone have a nice home, a good paid job and a happy life. Every homeless dog and cat will have a loving family. There would be no evil. No ISIS, Boko Haram, any terrorists.’
‘I would make bad leaders (Kim Jong Fat, Donald Trump, Buhari) better like reset their minds to better states. Also, there would be no hate, wars and conflict against countries.’
‘I would like more libraries that are accessible for everyone so that we can all learn more about the real world. I'll use my magic wand again so that there will be more public schools for people who can't afford private school. A lot of people who have money problems rely on public schools for their children's education. With libraries and schools, everybody will then have the right to education.’
It’s always interesting getting into the heads of kids and seeing what goes on in there and I’m happy that they were able to connect to the sad realities around them. What would you do if you had a magic wand?

As for Arda, he knows that the elderly are affected by coronavirus the most: "I would prepare a medicine and develop a vaccine so that coronavirus will not kill the old people." Then, Musa answers: "If I had a magic wand, I would erase the last month from the lives of lives of everyone."
All of these children are fourth graders from a primary school in Okmeydan?, ?stanbul. During their distance education, teacher Ebru asked them, "If you had a magical power..." They have written down their answers, most of which have a wish in common: A life free from coronavirus...
