  • Some of the common Social evils still prevalent in India are the caste system, dowry system, poverty, unemployment,  girl infanticide, maternal mortality, and domestic violence.
  • Steps taken by the Government to combat theseevils:

-Indian law does not permit the practice of untouchability. Article 17 of the Constitution of India bans the practice. The government of India has passed the Untouchability Act, 1955, to eliminate any form of caste based discrimination

-The Dowry Prohibition (DP) Act : Asking or giving of dowry can be punished by an imprisonment of up to six months, or a fine of up to Rs. 15000 or the amount of dowry whichever is higher and imprisonment up to 5 years

-In 1983, domestic violence was recognised as a specific criminal offence by the introduction of section 498-A into the Indian Penal Code.
