I want to know why yellow seed colour is the dominant trait in a pea plant and green recessive which is given in the meritnation video? Isn't green seed usually seen? so it should be the dominant character.

In pea plants, yellow colour seeds are dominant.  The dominant character / colour only appear in the F1 generation. It was proved by Mendel through the "law of dominance'.

The seed colour is different for different plants. For example, Fenugreek - Methi, coriander - dhania seeds are yellow in colour, Mustard seeds are black in colour, Peas are green or yellow in different varieties, Green, brownish green and brown colour seeds are in beans varieties and so on.

More to know:

  • Mendel selected pea plants to carry out his study on the inheritance of characters from parents to offspring. Peas have visible contrasting characters. Mendel observed seven traits that are easily recognized and apparently only occur in one of two forms. They are
  1. flower color is purple or white
  2. seed color is yellow or green
  3. flower position is axil or terminal
  4. pod shape is inflated or constricted
  5. stem length is long or short
  6. pod color is yellow or green
  7. seed shape is round or wrinkled

  • Peas have bisexual flowers and therefore undergo self pollination easily. Thus, pea plants produce offsprings with same traits generation after generation.
  • In pea plants, cross pollination can be easily achieved by emasculation in which the stamen of the flower is removed without affecting the pistil.
  • Pea plants have a short life span and produce many seeds in one generation.
