i) What emotions do you as readers feel as you look at the photograph through Shirley’s eyes? ii)What seems to be the poetess’s attitude towards death?

Dear student,

The answers to your questions are as follows:
  1. We as a reader feel the pain which the poet must be feeling while holding a memory in her hand, which her mother used to talk about so fondly. She has lost her mother long ago and now her mother & the memories of her mother both are a thing of past for her. Readers feel nostalgic along with the poet and are compelled to think about the importance of people and their memories in their own life.
  2. The poetess treats death as an inevitable truth which took away from her the most precious person and her laughter. She is sad to lose her mother but will have to deal with it and thus, she greets the moment of realization with no words and absolute silence.
