Identify the caution and anion in a given salt

Identify the caution and anion in a given salt Identify the cation and anion in a given sale (i) (ii) (iii) Physical characteristic of salt Dry and wet test for cation Dry and wet test for anion Confirmatory test for cation and anion

Dear Student,

Theoretically one can know it by charge on species after dissociation of molecule
Example : NH4Cl dissociate to give NH4 + as cation i.e ammonium ion and Cl as Cl gas.

But if you want to detect its experimentally you need to know and follow the given step as follows :
1. Physical properties of salt i.e its color as some of the cation are colored and can easily to detect.
Example : Potassium dichromate, a bright orange salt
Smell of given salts
Example : ammonium cation which smell pungent like that of ammonia gas

For 2 and 3 points refer the below link, though you will be learning in higher classes

4.  The last but most important is the individual test of cation and anion some of which you will study in class 12 and higher studies or you can learn a separate scheme for each cation and anion of salt by experimental test present in study material meritnation.
The confirmatory test can be performed after it is confirmed from the preliminary tests to assure the presence of respective ions.
