Identify the error in each of the following sentences and rectify it:
  1. The soccer team won most of their games.
  2. Studying the language and culture of a foreign country is essential to the tourist who expect to learn from his or her vacation abroad.

Dear student,

Here is the answer:

1) The soccer team won most of its games.
Explanation: Collective nouns are considered singular identity. Some examples of collective nouns are team, herd, group, committee etc. Thus we only use “their” when the noun it is replacing is plural. As soccer team is a singular identity we use the possessive determiner "its". "Its" is used to say that something belongs to someone.

2) Studying the language and culture of a foreign country are essential to the tourist, who expect to learn from his or her vacation abroad.
Explanation: When the subject of the sentence consists of two or more nouns ( here language and culture) or pronouns and these are connected by "and", we use use a plural verb. Thus instead of "is" we would use "are".
