If P (-4, k), Q (k, 5), R (2, k) and S (k, 5) are the coordinates of a rectangle, find the value of k. Also find the coordinates

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

Given : If P (-4, k), Q (k, 5), R (2, k) and S (k, 5) are the coordinates of a rectangle,

We know distance formula  :  d = x2 - x12 + y2 - y12 ,

Now we find length of PQ , So x1 =  - 4 , x2 =  k  and  y1 = k , y2 = 5 , Then ,

PQ  =  k -  - 42 +  5 - k2 = k + 4 2 +  5 - k2= k2 +16 + 8 k + 25 + k2 - 10 k =2k2 - 2 k + 41 unit

Now we find length of  RS , So x1 = 2 , x2 =  k  and  y1 = k , y2 = 5 , Then ,

RS  =  k - 22 +  5 - k2 = k2 +4 - 4 k + 25 + k2 - 10 k =2k2 - 14 k + 29 unit

We know opposite sides are equal in length in rectangle , So

PQ  =  RS , Substitute values we get :

2k2 - 2 k + 41 = 2k2 - 14 k + 292k2 - 2 k + 41 = 2k2 - 14 k + 2912 k  = - 12 k  = - 1                                  ( Ans )
